The Joplin Humane Society has been dedicated to the well-being of animals since 1948. While much has changed over the years, our passion for pets has remained constant. In 2019, we launched the Shelter Pals Reading Program, and thanks to dedicated readers like you, it has continued to grow and thrive!
The Shelter Pals Reading Program benefits both pets and children. When kids read aloud to shy or anxious animals, it helps the pets feel more comfortable, encouraging them to approach the front of their kennels. This is key, as pets that engage with visitors are more likely to be adopted quickly, reducing their time at the shelter.
For children, the program offers a safe, judgment-free space to build reading confidence while nurturing empathy and compassion for animals in need.
This program allows kids to make a positive impact on the world by helping animals in need.
WHO: Kids ages 6-15
WHERE: Joplin Humane Society, 140 Emperor Lane, Joplin, MO
COST: A yearly $10 donation per child and can be paid online.
WHEN: The second Monday of EVERY MONTH!!
