New Rescue Partners always welcome!
Why partner with Joplin Humane Society?
|
Joplin Humane Society is a high volume shelter committed to saving lives and improving the quality of lives of animals in our community. Our shelter is a busy pace; we handle between 600-1300 animals each month. We are a "contract shelter", which means we receive found animals from animal control and Good Samaritans as well as accept unwanted pets from owners. We are very proud to say that we have not had to euthanize an animal because it has been here too long or because we are tight on space since 2012....but the key to continuing this success is YOU...our Rescue Partners!
We would love to have you join us! We get some absolutely amazing pets; dogs puppies, cats and kittens all in need of rescue assistance. |
What does it take to become a partner?
Joplin Humane Society is always excited to meet and work with new rescue organizations. Our staff truly care about each and every animal, and want the very best for them, so of course want to make sure that all agencies we partner with are committed to the same high standards. We want to make partnering to save lives as easy as possible, but we will need a few things to get started.
- We need the full name, physical address and contact information for the agency as well as the specific information on what persons are specifically authorized to choose animals and enter into agreements regarding tagging and transport.
- We will need some basic background information about your agency; how long you have been involved in rescue and how your agency works....for example, if you have a facility or foster based, what your adoption protocol is and if you have an open door to accept returned pets. We may ask for "rescue references" from other established partner rescue or area shelters. We will also need a veterinary reference to process your partnership application.
- We will ask for a copy of your Dept. of Ag License (MO) and 501c3 certificate or any other applicable licenses.
- We ask for your understanding that while we will respond to inquires as quickly as possible, we may not always be able to respond or provide requested information immediately. Our Rescue Coordinator is also our Foster Coordinator as well as our extra office person! We all wear many hats. We want to get animals out as quickly as possible and facilitate great rescue relationships, and promise to do our very best to get you answers or information as soon as we can.
How the Process Works
We want to make it simple for our rescue partners to choose animals from our shelter. Our shelter always has a great variety of dogs to choose from; and normally every pet is available to be transferred to rescue. Occasionally, there may be dogs our puppies that have an "interested person" (local adopter) who is waiting for the dog to become available, or, the dog or puppy may be a type which we know we have many people who have expressed interest in adopting. In that case, we do give local adopters first right of refusal. This is not a regular occurrence, and we will let you know if we need to give a dog or puppy you are interested in a chance to be adopted locally. We call the process of choosing dogs "tagging". When you see a pet that you are sure you want to transfer from our shelter to your rescue, you will need to comment under the picture or post "Please tag for XYZ Rescue. JHS Please Confirm?" Some pets may have lots of interest, and the comment thread can be confusing. We promise to try to be fair and tag the dog for the first rescue who has asked to tag. Asking questions or getting information does not confirm a tag, so if you are very interested but need more information, we ask that you specifically ask us to place a "pending tag" while you work out the details. Please do not ask for a pending tag unless you are confident that you will be accepting the dog. You can also ask for assistance by contacting our rescue coordinator.Once you have confirmed, our next step will be arranging vetting for the dogs you have chosen and setting up pick up or transport. We will have the dog vetted as soon as possible based on stray hold and/or medical conditions which may affect surgery. We will update you with any changes in scheduled dates as soon as we become aware of them.
Our goal is to move dog as smoothly and efficiently as possible, however, since we are dealing with animals and not widgets, things don't allays go according to plan. Illness like kennel cough can cause surgery dates and transports to be postponed. We realize this makes arrangements difficult for our receiving rescues, and we are working diligently to increase our base of foster homes. We have dedicated one part of our foster program exclusively to rescue pets. It is our hope that one day we will have enough forts homes to be able to immediately be able to move pets tagged by rescues out of the shelter and into foster homes until they are ready to leave. This would be a win/win all around; it helps our shelter with space, and helps keep the pet happy and healthy until they leave.
All dogs will be spayed/neutered, current on all vaccines, dewormed and treated for fleas and ticks; we do not send unaltered animals to rescue unless there is a medical reason that the pet cannot be altered. Fees for those services are listed below. There are also many optional things we can offer, such as microchipping, heartworm testing, diagnostic blood work and more. Our rescue coordinator will be happy to discuss our many services with you. Payments are expected at time of transport unless other arrangements have been made; we pay our vets weekly for these services and as such must ask for timely payment from our rescue partners.
Some of our dogs are available to rescue at a REDUCED COST or even FEE WAIVED. Pets that are sponsored will be available to rescue with no charges for spay/neuter and basic vaccines. Sponsored dogs have had these fees paid by a private individual to help the pet be chosen for adoption or rescue, Vintage Dogs are available fee waived to rescue; all costs are covered except extras you choose like heartworm testing or microchipping. Vintage Dogs are dogs that have been with us for more than 30 days; the shelter absorbs the costs of the vetting in an effort to help them get chosen for adoption or rescue.
There are several way to view dogs that are available for rescue. You can visit the AARC Rescue Page; new pets are shared there daily along with some basic information. You may also browse all of our available dogs on our shelter website. We promise, you won't be disappointed, our shelter receives amazing dogs! If you need more information about specific dogs (age, behavior, medical questions) our Rescue Coordinator will be happy to assist you!

Important things to consider before pulling animals from our shelter
Joplin Humane Society makes every effort to only send healthy and behaviorally sound pets to our rescue partners. We try very hard to insure that transport/sending date commitments are met; keeping an animal longer than planned is not only an inconvenience to the receiving rescue who may have foster or adopter commitments, but it makes things very difficult for us as well, each and every kennel is critical to our shelter and staff. We want the animals to leave on time as much as you do!
It is important to understand both how our "shelter flow" and processing work to understand how different challenges may affect rescue pets and our ability to meet agreed commitments.

- Any pet that comes in as "stray" (found by citizen) or "seized" (picked up by animal control) is held for seven days to give the owner a chance to reclaim their pet. On the average, less than 7% of dogs and less than 3% of cats are returned to owners.
- All dogs receive intranasal bordatella upon intake. This is our best hope of preventing or minimizing kennel cough; however, in the perfect world, the vaccine wold be give up to two weeks prior to entering the shelter, so it is far from perfect. Most dogs will get kennel cough during their stay, dogs will generally break with kennel cough anywhere between 8-14 days of arrival. Any dogs that develop kennel cough are treated with antibiotics and cough suppressants. We work very hard to minimize exposure of sick dogs to healthy dogs; but sheer numbers, space and the relative ease of transmission make it very difficult. Dogs with kennel cough will not pass a health certificate exam and will not be able to travel.
- All puppies (and any dogs that appears to be less than 9 months) are also vaccinated with distemper upon intake. All dogs receive a basic intake exam and are dewormed and treated for fleas and ticks. They will have they temperature taken, their ears cleaned, nails trimmed, etc..and will be scheduled to see the veterinarian for any concerns noted during the intake exam. Adult dogs may be scheduled out for three days prior to receiving their distemper vaccine and intake examination.
- Puppies are vaccinated as young as 4 weeks if they have no mother, or 6 weeks with a mother and will be re-vaccinated/dewormed every two weeks until they are 4 months old. Our preference is to not send puppies on transport (or offer for adoption) until they have had at least two shots to minimize the risks of Canine Parvovirus.
- Any dogs or puppies that your rescue receives from our shelter should be considered potentially exposed to kennel cough and parvovirus; we will make every effort to ensure only healthy animals are sent out to rescues, but animals can look very healthy at the time of their health certificate examination, but within hours or days break with a disease or virus. We STRONGLY recommend that you quarantine any animals you receive from our shelter.
- Other common illness we find among our homeless pet population are mange (sarcoptic and demodectic) flea allergy dermatitis, and fungal and yeast infections of the skin. We will do our best to diagnose and make you aware of any changes in the health of any pets you have tagged for rescue. We will also certainly release you from any obligation to accept a pet that you have tagged based on new or developing medical concerns.
- All pets will be vaccinated with age appropriate vaccines including rabies and altered prior to leaving for rescue. Any pet leaving the state must leave with a Health Certificate. Pets will need to be scheduled to leave on the available date/transport. JHS provides transports most Fridays to Winding River in Kansas City, MO and special larger transports can be arranged.
- JHS will ALWAYS accept our dogs back if there is a problem. Please contact us if you have any concerns about a pet you have received.
