Found a Lost or Stray Cat?
Not all cats you see outdoors are lost! Many are pets who live both indoors and outdoors, while others may be community cats who are perfectly at home outside. If the cat appears healthy, relaxed, and confident, they’re likely fine and don’t need assistance. However, if the cat seems ill, injured, or distressed, they could be lost and in need of help.

Found a Lost Cat? Here’s What to Do:
  1. Walk Around the Neighborhood
Talk to neighbors and ask if they recognize the cat. Most lost pets are found within a mile of home, so the cat might live nearby. You can also ask mail carriers or other people in the area for help.
  2. Post Photos on Social Media & Neighborhood Groups
Save time by posting the cat’s photo on Petco Love Lost. This free service uses photo-matching technology to connect lost pets with their families. It can search across multiple platforms, including local shelters, Nextdoor, and Neighbors by Ring. You can also create flyers and hang them within a one-mile radius of where you found the cat.
  3. Check for a Microchip
Take the cat to a vet or pet supply store to scan for a microchip. Most will do this for free and can help identify the owner.
  4. File a Found Pet Report
Notify your local animal shelter that you’ve found a lost cat. This will help the shelter connect with the family if they contact or visit the shelter looking for their pet.

By following the steps above you can help keep healthy, relaxed and confident cats in their community and out of shelter.  Less than 4% of cats that are brought to the shelter are reclaimed by their families.
